ITSS

The Injured Trauma Survivor Screen (ITSS; pronounced “its”) is a brief, nine-item questionnaire that was created for, and normed on, patients admitted to the Trauma Service of a Level 1 Trauma Center following an acute injury event. Developing an effective means to screen for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Episode (MDE) in this population has been highlighted as a major need by the American College of Surgeons - Committee on Trauma. To address this critical gap, our group created the ITSS which was developed after a comprehensive literature review focused on prospective longitudinal studies that identified various robust risk predictors (i.e., perceived threat to life).1 We then used stepwise logistic regression to identify the strongest items among these highly predictive risk factors. The ITSS has yielded a sensitivity (true positive rate) of 75% for the development of PTSD and MDE at one-month post injury, and ~85% for PTSD and ~72% for MDE at six-months post-injury.
